Setting dimension combinations in BC

We all want super accurate business data. But we know there’s always a chance of a whoopsie daisy when distractions pop up – particularly if they’re cake shaped and the whole office is hurtling towards them. Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Dynamics 365 Business Central’s inbuilt dimension combinations help protect you against any potential slip ups. And help you feed your hunger for meticulous data.

Your default settings will mean that there are no limitations on which combination of dimensions or dimension values you can use. But there’s bound to be times when you should tag a transaction with a dimension within your Microsoft Dynamics NAV or Dynamics 365 Business Central system, but ensure no other dimensions are tagged at the same time. Or it could be that a specific value for a dimension should prevent a specific value of another dimension from being used. By stopping certain combinations of dimensions or dimension values, you can be sure that your data entry accuracy will be top notch, and your productivity reporting enhanced.

So for example, you might not want to tag an invoice to the ‘Northern’ PROJECT Dimension Value, and then to the ‘Eastern’ DEPARTMENT Dimension Value. Dimension Combinations stops this from happening! Get setting relevant combos for your business today.

Here’s how:

  • Access the dimension combination page. Here you’ll find your matrix of dimension names
  • At the intersection of two dimensions click and set to be fully blocked (i.e. you’ll never be able to us these two dimensions together) or set them to limited
  • If you chose the limited option you’ll need to drill down to the next level in your matrix for combinations of dimension values which you can individually block or allow.

Pretty nifty techie top tip for Dynamics NAV and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central huh?
